RECORDING INFORMATION | |
International street date 19 March 2001. 27 January 2001 was the centenary of the death of Giuseppe Verdi, the worlds greatest opera composer. The high point of the Viva Verdi centenary celebrations is this thrillingly dramatic new recording of one of the most famous and popular sacred works of the classical repertoire, the great Verdi Requiem. First performed in 1874 between the premieres of Aida and Otello, Verdis setting of the Requiem Mass is probably the most dramatic sacred work ever composed, requiring four operatic soloists and a huge orchestra and chorus. Its main themes are widely known through their use in many films and advertisements. This new recording features a dream team of opera stars, with the mighty Kirov Opera orchestra and chorus under the baton of Valery Gergiev. |
