A complete virtuoso pianist, strong, with fantastic keyboard prowess, Gavrilov was awarded the Gold Medal in the International Tchaikovsky Competition before he had even graduated from the Moscow Conservatory.

His technical brilliance is perhaps best heard in Balakirev's Islamey, but you also hear it in the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 1 and the Tchaikovsky Theme and Variations.
