Soprano Jessye Norman is one of the legendary artists on Philips, with a long history and extensive cataloguel. Her interpretations of repertoire ranging from art-song to opera to gospel are considered definitive, and her reputation for bringing contemporary music to a wider audience is renowned. Now Norman, one of the greatest classical vocalists, comes together with Michel Legrand, the French composer/musician, in a crossover recording titled I Was Born In Love With You, an album of some of the most beautiful love songs of the twentieth century. Legrand has scored iconic soundtracks of this century, including "The Windmills Of Your Mind" (from The Thomas Crown Affair) and "The Summer Knows" (from Summer of '42). He has won three Oscars and two Grammy awards, and collaborated with stars such as Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand. The songs are moody, jazzy, sophisticated and above all, romantic. This is Jessye stepping out of opera and very naturally into the role of "chanteuse". |
