RECORDING INFORMATION | |
Parable in one act, loosely based on a group of Russian folk tales
concerning Kashchey (tenor), an evil sorcerer who keeps captive the Princess
Unearthly - beauty (soprano) until she is rescued by Prince Ivan (baritone). The
opera had its first performance in Moscow in December 1902. In March 1905, students from the St. Petersburg Conservatory organised a performance under Glazunov's direction as a tribute to Rimsky-Korsakov who had been dismissed from his professorship for supporting a strike. The opera thus gained a revolutionary aura.
Notable stars featuring in major roles include Maria Shaguch as the
Tsarina and Larissa Diadkova as the daughter of Kashchey.
