- Percy Grainger was and eccentric individualist who, during his career as concert pianist, walked from city to city because he didn't like motorised transportation. Born in Australia, he lived for a while in the U.K. and Germany and eventually became and American citizen.

- His music shows that he was influenced by the folk songs of the countries in which he travelled. For it all has a romantic, folk quality that is often described as "English" even though it is English, Australian, Welsh, Irish and American all mixed together. Settings of folk songs from all these nations are included here.
